LDI’s Emerging Leaders Virtual Summer courses focus on developing kindness, compassion, and empathy to themselves, peers, and other adult relationships and building employability competency leading to meaningful work.

Developing Self-Awareness

  • Emotional self-awareness- ability to read/understand your emotions and recognize their impact on work performance and relationships.
  • Accurate self-assessment-ability to give realistic evaluations of personal strengths/limitations
  • Self-confidence- ability to have a positive, strong sense of one’s self-worth.

Developing Self-Management

  • Self-control-ability to keep disruptive emotions/impulses under control
  • Transparency-maintaining standards of personal honesty and integrity
  • Managing self/responsibilities
  • Adaptability- flexibility in adapting to changing situations, overcoming obstacles.

Social Awareness

  • Empathy-ability to understand others/take active interest in their concerns.
  • Organizational awareness- ability to read the hidden message of work life, build networks, and navigate social/workplace politics

  • Establish boundaries of search, previous experience required, location, work environment, compensation
  • Conducting employer research
  • Workplace observations

Job Exploration

Using information from personal profile and community experiences to identify a possible job that aligns with personal profile values, beliefs and skills with employer wants/needs

  • Introduce and practice common interview questions and answers
  • How to use relevant transferable skills to answer interviewer questions that are almost always asked
  • Rehearse with peers
  • Video with staff
  • Use interview rubric for feedback
